whoops

A journal editor has asked that I review a manuscript. I suppose this is a CV builder too even if it can't be placed under the "publications" heading.

Is it just chance that I am getting this request? Seems odd but the editor made no mention of my advisors and I know they are clear that I want to be a BOOK reviewer.

I got asked to review an article twice. Once was a really bad article in one of my prelim areas, probably they thought that only a grad student would be willing to do it. The other one was in a journal that I had just sent a publication in a very similar topic, so they figured out I'm one of the people in this specialty.
Also, when you review, sometimes they also ask you to name other people who would be appropriate for reviewing this paper, so it's likely that a faculty did that with you.

It's probably good just to do the review to get a sense of how to do reviews, for practice. If it's one of the major journals, it's even more likely than usual that they sent you a manuscript they don't regard as promising. Anyway, my number one piece of advice with reviewing is not to spend too much time on it, esp. if the ms. is a reject.

so there's no advantage of making a good review?
