on reviews
Apparently it is appropriate to have your advisor recommend you as a reviewer. If you're faculty I suppose you're supposed to make the contact yourself.
The book reviews I did as a grad student were cases in which my advisor had been asked to do the review and then recommended me instead. As I said, I don't know how the world of unsolicited reviews works.
the only book review I did was for a professor I knew as an undergrad. he is the editor for a journal and needed a specific book reviewed and he asked me to do it. There was a discussion recently on a listserve about reviews and the consensus was that it was totally okay to contact journal editors and volunteer to review books-- but not with specific books in mind-- just to say you would be willing to review books within certain subject areas.
